The Sequoia established itself as a versatile and rugged sports-utility vehicle when it was first introduced seven years ago. The 2008 Sequoia builds on that heritage with an eye toward efficiency, comfort and performance.

In the latest generation, Toyota engineers increased cabin space and amenities. They also improved fuel efficiency for this full-sized SUV and lowered emissions, reflecting Toyota's on-going efforts to deliver eco-friendly transportation. A new engine available for Sequoia delivers an additional 105 horsepower and 12 percent better fuel economy.

Toyota 2008 Sequoia The 2008 Sequoia has increased in length, width and height. The vehicle's exterior—including mirrors, wipers, A-pillar and roof header—was shaped to maximize aerodynamic efficiency and minimize wind noise. Its underside also is optimized to reduce drag, lower wind noise and help improve directional stability.

Under the hood

The standard Sequoia engine is a 4.7L V8 that delivers 276 horsepower at 5,400 RPM. It is mated to a smooth-shifting electronically controlled five-speed automatic, electronically controlled transmission.

Toyota 2008 Sequoia The 2008 Sequoia also offers a new DOHC 5.7L V8 engine that improves acceleration, especially while towing. It produces 381 hp, one of the highest outputs in this vehicle class. This ULEV-II compliant engine uses four valves per cylinder and Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to produce 401 lb-ft of torque. The 2008 Sequoia provides the acceleration desired by users and an available towing capacity of 10,000 lbs.

A new six-speed, electronically controlled transmission is mated with the 5.7L V8. It employs highly accurate gear-tooth surfaces that help ensure low noise levels. A Tow/Haul mode that extends use of the lower gear ratios is included as part of the transmission package.

On four-wheel-drive models, a two-speed transfer case that contains a lockable Torsen limited-slip differential is used to transmit power to both the front and rear wheels. The transfer case is shifted electronically via a rotary knob within easy reach of the driver, and it locks with the push of a button. High-capacity universal joints are used in the drive line to accommodate the available power of the engines.

Comfort & Convenience

The new Sequoia was designed to comfortably accommodate tall riders in each of its eight seats. A second-row seat is equipped with a sliding-type seat adjuster. An advanced seat-cushion linkage reclining mechanism elevates third row passengers.

Toyota 2008 Sequoia A newly designed four-spoke steering wheel contains controls for the Sequoia's air conditioning system, Bluetooth®-capable phones and other functions. It is connected to a newly developed steering column with a floating intermediate shaft that helps enhance steering feel and minimize noise and vibration. This steering column offers both tilt and telescopic functions, and a powered memory feature is available.

The 2008 Sequoia offers automatic air conditioning with solar sensors as well as automatic left and right independent temperature controls. This three-zone system uses a newly developed multi-layer filter to ensure that air brought into the passenger cabin is as free as possible from from dust, pollen and other contaminants.

The vehicle's audio system is improved and speaker placement is optimized for premium sound. The SR5 model includes an AM/FM/CD sound system with eight speakers and MP3 ports. Drivers may also get a navigation system with a large seven-inch display.

Safety

The latest Sequoia includes larger headlamps and oversized side-view mirrors. It also employs active and passive safety features to help provide protection for vehicle occupants. Driver and passenger seat-mounted airbags and side-curtain airbags are included as standard equipment. Roll-sensing side curtain airbags extend from the front seat to the third-row seat.

Toyota offers its STAR Safety System of driver-assisting technologies as standard equipment on the 2008 Sequoia. The package includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking with electronic brake force distribution and Brake Assist.
